Study finds thick quilt makes sleep sounder. Do you like to sleep under a thick quilt? There are some duvets and silk quilts on the market today that are both lightweight and warm. However, some people report after using it that they feel that they don’t sleep as soundly as they used to when covered with a light quilt. This is not an illusion, research has confirmed it!
A 2020 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, a journal of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, showed that covering yourself with a heavy quilt can significantly improve sleep! The researchers randomly assigned the recruited adults to two groups. One group used a weighted blanket weighing between 6-8 kilograms, and the other group used a 1.5 kilogram blanket as a control group for a total of four weeks.
Research shows that within a month, 42.2% of people who used a 6-8kg weighted blanket experienced significant improvement in insomnia, and within a year, 78% of people experienced significant improvement in sleep quality and reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. Researchers say the blanket’s weight mimics the sensation of being hugged and touched, helping the body relax and lead to better sleep.
Another study found the underlying reason why “heavy quilts lead to better sleep”. A 2022 study published in the Journal of Sleep Research found that using a heavy quilt can increase the amount of melatonin naturally produced in the body (melatonin is a hormone that helps with sleep).
